LITMA announces a new series of instruction for young violin and string bass players. The program will be run by three experienced Nassau County music teachers. Eric Marten has founded several contradance bands performing for LITMA events since the early 80's, The Barnburners, The Long Island Fiddlemonic Orchestra, The "No Frills" Contradance Orchestra as well as school fiddle clubs. Some of his groups have made TV and radio appearances and he has been music historian at Old Bethpage Village Restoration for over 25 years. For several years Eric was president of the local chapter of the New York State Old Time Fiddlers Association. He now teaches classical violin and fiddle privately in Nassau County. He will be assisted by two experienced instrumental music teachers, Eric and Candice Mordhorst, both Hofstra music graduates who currently teach in the Freeport and North Shore school districts. They all currently perform in fiddle bands on Long Island, as well as with NYSSMA and All-County preparation, judging, and private instruction.
Depending on participation, we plan to break up into smaller groups at the sessions according to abilities and experience. Several current and former members of the Barnburners and The Long Island Fiddlemonic Orchestra will be invited to come and assist, as well as add guitar, bass and piano accompaniment However, the main purpose will be to get young people fiddling for enjoyment. Participants should have at least a couple of years experience in violin or string bass, and the fee for each session is $15. Bring music stands; music will be provided.
